Algebra - Writing mathematical phrases using letters to represent unknown numbers
Ex. 5 + x = 7 or 7 - x = 5

Variable - A letter used to represent an unknown number in an equation or expression
Ex. 5 + x = 10 x <---- is the variable

Constant - The integer in an algebraic equation or expression
Ex. 5+ x = 10 In this case 5 is the integer

Expression - A pattern that may have many answers
Ex. 5x

Equation - An equation only has 1 answer and contains an equal sign
Ex. 1 + x = 2

How to Solve a 1 Step Equation
1) Isolate the variable
2) Cancel the constant using a zero pair

3) Balance - What you do to one side of the equation do to the other

4) Verify to check - Rewrite the equation but include the answer you received if they match up your correct
















How to Solve 2 Step Equation

1) Isolate the variable
2) Cancel the constant using zero pairs

3) Balance the equation out
4) Simplify the variable

5) Balance the equation again

6) Verify to check

Algebra consists of the following to consider it as algebra, but first what is "algebra"?
Algebra is writing mathematical phrases using letters to represent numbers and needs the following to make it algebra:

Variable - a letter that represents a number in an algebraic equation or expression
Examples: n/3=5, 2x=8, etc.

Constant - the integer in an algebraic equation or expression.
Examples: 73 - a= 70, 53g = 106, etc.

Expression - pattern - many answers
Examples: 1 + m, 2f, etc.

Equation - only has one answer and an equal sign (=)
Examples: h + 100= 170, -5j= -25, etc.
Steps To Find Equality For One Or Two Step Algebraic Equations
  1. isolate variable
  2. cancel using opposite
  3. balance - do the same operation on the other side of equal sign (=)
  4. verify to check (equality)

Sounds easy right? So here are some questions to see if you really know what you're doing is correct. Refer to the rules or steps above if you forget. Good luck!

* Remember that a rectangular x algebra tile, green (positive) or white (negative) has no value. x only represents an unknown number, but each square algebra tile represents a positive (green) or a negative (white) one. Also don't ever use algebra tiles to verify your answer.

Solving One-Step Equations

Question #1

3 + x= 5

3 -3 + x= 5 -3

x = 2

3 + x = 5

3 + 2= 5

5 = 5

Question #2

n - 7 = 5

n - 7 + 7= 5 + 7

n = 12

n - 7 = 5

12 - 7= 5

5 = 5

Solving Two-Step Equations

Question #3

3x - 2 = 16

3x - 2 + 2= 16 +2

3x = 18

3x /3= 18/3

x = 6

3x -2 = 16

3(6) - 2= 16

18 - 2 = 16

16 = 16

x/2 + 1= 2
x/2 + 1 - 1= 2 - 1
x/2 = 1
x/2 x 2 = 1 x 2
x = 2
x/2 + 1= 2
2/2 + 1= 2
1 + 1= 2
2 = 2

One Step Equations:

To solve one step equations, you need to isolate the variable. To do that, you need to get rid of the constant, which is the integer in an algebraic equation or expression. To do that, you must cancel the number by using a zero pair. So now you need to balance. What ever you do to one side you must do to the other side. Then you must verify your answer to see if it is correct.

ex.
n +10 = 15
n +10 -10 = 15 -10
n = 5

Verify:

n +10 = 15
5 +10 = 15
15 = 15

n-2+2=2+2
n=4

4-2=2
2=2

Two Step Equations:

To solve two step equations, you must do what you have to do in one step equations, get rid of the constant. Then once that is gone you must isolate the variable. The opposite of multiplying is dividing, the opposite of dividing is multiplying, the opposite of adding is subtracting and the opposite of subtracting is adding. So you must cancel out all the numbers. Then you have to verify your answer.

ex.

2n + 3 = 11
2n+3-3= 11-3
2n = 8
2n÷2=8÷2
n = 4

Verify:
2n+3=11
2(4)+3=11
8+3=11
11=11

Alge-Tiles:


ex.

x÷2-2=1
x÷2-2+2=1+2
x÷2=3
x÷2x2=3x2
x=6

Verify:

x÷2-2=1
6÷2-2=1
3-2=1
1=1
