Hanin's Great Big Book of Integers

Integers
Chapter 1:

Adding Integers (gr.7 review)

Find zeropairs for the following integers

- 6 + 6

+ 10 - 10

19 -19

-16 +16

- 11 +11

+14 -14

63 -63

Integers Grade 7

(+4) + (-4) = 0

Standard Form

+4 + -4

+4 -4

4 -4 Pure Standard Form

-6+2=-4

-6-2=-8

-6+10=+4

-6-(-4)=-2

10-(-4)=+4
removing the negative
part of the zeropair

-6-(-4)=-2

-10+6=-4

6-7+2=+1

14-(-3)=+17

-3-(-7)=+4

-3-7=-10

3-7=-4

3+7=+10

Chapter 2: Multiplying Integers

(+3)x(+8)

(+3)(+8) (when brackets touch it means multiply and when numbers and brackets touch it means multiply too.)

3(+8) (standard form)

(+2)x(+3)
or
2 groups 0f +3
+++ +++
= 6

(2)x(-3)
or
2 groups of (-3)
--- ---
= - 6

(- 2)x(+3)
remove 2 groups of (+3)
+++ +++ ( these are removed)
--- ---
= - 6

(-2)x(-3)
remove 2 groups of (-3)
+++ +++
--- --- (these are removed)
= 6

(4)x(+2)
or
4 groups of (+2)
++ ++ ++ ++
= 8

(5)x(-2)
or
5 groups of (-2)
-- -- -- -- --
= - 10

(-4)x(2)
remove 4 roups 0f (2)
++ ++ ++ ++ (these are removed)
-- -- -- --
= - 8

(-6)x(- 1)
remove 6 groups of (- 1)
+ + + + + +
- - - - - - (these are removed)
= 6

If the first number in the equation is negative then remove
but if the first number is positive then make groups.

HWB 8.2 (pages 90-91)

2. Write each repeated addition as a
multiplication.

a) (+5) + (+5) + (+5) + (+5)
(4)x(+5)

b) (-7) + (-70 + (-7)
(3)x(-7)

c) (-3) + (-3) +(-3) + (-3) + (-3)
(5)x(-3)

d) (+2) + (+2) + (+2)

(3)x(+2)
3. Write each expression as a repeated
addition.

a) (+4)x(+1)
(+1) + (+1) + (+1) + (+1)

b) (+3)x(-6)
(-6) + (-6) + (+6)

c) (+5)x(-2)
(-2) + (-2) + (-2) + (-2) + (-2)

d) (+2)x(+9)
(+9) + (+9)

4. What multiplication statement does
each set of diagrams represent?

a) +++ +++ +++
(+3)x(+3)

b) ----- -----
(+2)x(-5)

c) -- -- (remove these)
++ ++

(-2)x(-2)

d) ++++ ++++ (remove these)
---- ----
(-2)x(+4)

5. Complete each multiplication
stament. Show your thinking.

a) (+2)x(+8)= +16

b) (+4) x(-3)= -12

c) (-1)x(+8)= - 8

d) (-3)x(-5)= +15

6. Use the multiplication of two integers
to represent each situation. Then,
determine the product and explain
its meaning.

a) Serena mows her neighbour's
lawn once a week. If she gets
paid $6.00 each time, how much does she earn over eight weeks?

(+8)x(+6)= +48

She will earn $48.00.

b) The temperature dropped 3 C
per hour. What was the total drop
in temperature at the end of 12
hours?

(-12)x(+3)=-36

The total drop was 36 C.

Sign Rule:

Even = When you have an even number of NEGATIVE factors the product is POSITIVE.

Odd = When you have an odd number of NEGATIVE factors the product is NEGATIVE.

Chapter 4:

Order of operation (BEDMAS)

(+5)x(-3)+(-6) / (+3)
(+5)x(-3)+[(-6)/(+3)]

(+5)x(-3)+(-2)

(+5)x(-3)+(-2)

(-15)+(-2)
= - 17
